Advancing Space Mission Design, One Trajectory at a Time
PolySpace Lab is Cal Poly’s astrodynamics and mission design research laboratory. We develop advanced methods and computational tools for trajectory optimization, mission analysis, and spacecraft operation across geocentric, cislunar, and interplanetary space. Our mission is to expand the horizon of astrodynamics through rigorous research, innovative software, and hands-on education. We bring together students, researchers, and collaborators to solve complex problems in space mission design and prepare the next generation of aerospace engineers. Our research areas can be broadly classified into the following four topics:
- Interplanetary Trajectory Optimization: We develop computational methods for designing efficient trajectories between planetary bodies while balancing mission objectives, planetary flybys and operational constraints.
- Geocentric Mission Design and Analysis: We design and evaluate Earth Observation missions, and support orbital transfers, lifetime trajectory analysis, maneuver planning, and mission-performance analysis.
- Cislunar Trajectory Design: We are actively investigating cislunar highways to support future lunar exploration. We develop computational tools that support cislunar mission analysis.
- Spacecraft Constellation Design and Analysis: Developing architectures and optimization methods for distributed spacecraft systems, with an emphasis on coverage, resilience, coordination, and mission effectiveness
