Biography

Joe Carpico is a lecturer in the Aerospace Engineering Department. He comes to Cal Poly after 33 years of experience in the aerospace industry. He completed his BS in Mechanical Engineering at the US Air Force Academy and his MS in Mechanical Engineering at Loyola Marymount University. His experience includes launch vehicle design, spacecraft and launch vehicle processing and launch operations, and space component and satellite design, fabrication, and testing. His career highlights include conversion of Titan II ICBMs to satellite launchers, launch of the first Western commercial communications satellite on a Proton launch vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, and development of the Hughes HS601 high power communications payload product line.

Joe has been instrumental in the launch of over 65 launches including satellite and/or launch vehicle integration, processing, and operations on Titan, Atlas, Ariane, Proton, Sea Launch, and Antares launch vehicles. His most recent experience was as the Launch Operations Manager for the Antares launch vehicle with Orbital ATK at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility. In this role, he led the team responsible for conversion from the Antares 130 to 230 configurations including integration & testing of the Stage Test demonstration and return-to-flight vehicles.

Joe is currently teaching the Spacecraft Design Course, together with Dr. Puig-Suari, and he will be teaching other courses in launch vehicle design, vehicle integration and testing, and space operations.
